Archival Frequencies

Archival Frequencies is a podcast by Black Archives Sweden that explores the sonic echoes within the archive. Sound carries waves of multiplicity, enabling sensorial explorations of complex social issues. Within archives, sound serves as a register of time, personal recollections, and collective memory—functioning both as a guide and a space for inquiry.

For this new season, we invite three sound practitioners to engage with sound as a method and to explore the frequencies that shape their work through sonic performance lectures.

In this first session, Lynnée Denise will curate an immersive listening experience that recontextualizes the musical legacies of pianists Roberta Flack, Mary Lou Williams, and Nina Simone. By highlighting their groundbreaking contributions to piano, jazz, and various subgenres of Black music, Denise will offer an aural renarrativization, that challenges the gendered narrative that often limits their recognition to just their vocal talents. This sonic performance lecture invites listeners to reconsider the profound significance of these artists, celebrating them not only as singers but as pivotal figures who reshaped the landscape of Black music.

This event is presented in collaboration with Retreat Radio. It will be livestreamed on Retreat Radio and recorded as part of the Archival Frequencies podcast, later available on major podcast platforms.
